Microsoft ended regular support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Computers running it will keep working, but they no longer receive routine security updates unless the owner uses a limited paid or special extended programme. Over time, that makes them a bigger target for attackers and less compatible with new software.

Step 1: find out what you have

List every computer in the school, office or home. Check the Windows version in Settings, under System, About.

Step 2: check if it can upgrade

Many Windows 10 computers can move to Windows 11 for free if they meet the hardware requirements. Windows' update settings will tell you. If a machine is too old, you have other choices.

Step 3: choose a path

  • Upgrade if the computer is eligible.
  • Replace the oldest machines first, starting with those used for money, records or exams.
  • Switch the operating system on old but working computers to a lightweight Linux, which can give them years more life for browsing and learning.
  • Extend support with the official extended security update options where available, as a short-term step.

Step 4: protect while you decide

Back up important files, keep your browser updated and avoid using an unsupported computer for banking.
