On 10 June 2024, Apple announced Apple Intelligence at its worldwide developers conference: a set of features for writing help, summaries, image tools and a smarter voice assistant on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple said that many tasks would run on the device itself, and that harder ones would go to its own secured servers.

Cloud AI versus on-device AI

  • Cloud AI sends your request over the internet to powerful computers. It can do more, but it needs a connection and raises questions about who sees your data.
  • On-device AI runs on the phone's own chip. It is faster for small tasks, works with a weak connection and keeps more information on the device, though it is less powerful.

Google, Samsung and others offer on-device AI features, too.

Why this matters in Nigeria

Data is expensive and connections can be unreliable. AI that works offline or with little data could be especially valuable here. But the best features often arrive first on the newest, priciest phones, which most families do not have.

The lesson for learners

Computing keeps moving toward your pocket. People who understand how phones work, how apps are built and how data is handled will be able to create what comes next, including tools designed for local needs.
