Once a child has outgrown blocks, the next question is which text-based language to try. We usually choose Python.

Why Python

  • It reads like English. A line such as print("Hello") is easy to understand and type.
  • It is used everywhere. Python is behind websites, data analysis, automation and much of today's AI work.
  • It is forgiving for beginners. Indentation makes the structure of a program visible, and error messages are usually helpful.
  • It grows with you. The same language works for a first game and for a data project.

A good first month

  1. Week 1: printing, variables and simple maths.
  2. Week 2: decisions with if and else.
  3. Week 3: repeating things with loops.
  4. Week 4: a small project, such as a quiz game or a simple calculator.

Tips for parents

Ask your child to show you what they built, even if you do not understand the code. Encourage them to change one thing and see what happens. Typing mistakes will happen, and finding them is part of the skill.
