On 30 November 2022, ChatGPT launched. Three years later, AI is built into search engines, phones, office software and homework apps. What has changed in schools?
What has changed
- Everyday use. Many pupils and teachers use AI tools for explanations, drafting and planning, whether or not the school has a policy.
- Teaching adapts. More teachers use oral questions, in-class writing and project work to see what pupils really understand.
- A new skill set. Writing prompts, checking answers and citing sources are now taught in many places.
What has not changed
- Learning still needs effort. A pupil who skips the struggle skips the learning.
- Teachers matter most. Tools help, but a teacher who knows the child makes the difference.
- Access is uneven. Devices, data and training are still scarce for many Nigerian pupils.
What still needs doing
- Clear school policies on how and when AI may be used.
- Teacher training so that adults are confident, not afraid.
- Teaching the basics of coding, maths and writing well.
- Open conversations with parents about safe and honest use.
